About Trelissick

Trelissick sits on its own peninsula at Feock, near Truro, looking out over the Fal estuary and Carrick Roads. The house was built around 1750 and remodelled in the 1820s by Thomas Daniell, whose family fortune came from Cornish copper mining. The estate later passed to the Gilbert family and then to the Copelands.

Much of the garden's planting dates from the Copeland years, when rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas and flowering cherries were added. Ida Copeland gave the estate to the National Trust in 1955. The garden has the feel of a landscaped park, split in two by a lane and linked by a small bridge.

What to see

  • The garden: formal lawns, herbaceous borders, exotic planting and an orchard, with tree ferns and other tender plants thriving in the mild climate.
  • National Plant Collections: photinias and azaras.
  • The house: south facing rooms open seasonally, with a tearoom and river views.
  • The estate: parkland and woodland running down to the water, with walks to Roundwood Quay and an Iron Age promontory fort.
